Level: BGE S1-S3: Third Level
Subject: Mathematics and Numeracy

Boost attainment, engagement and confidence with this progressive approach to Third Level Maths. Pupils are guided through mathematical concepts with worked examples, plenty of practice and opportunities to check that skills are secure before moving on.

Covering all CfE Third Level Benchmarks for Numeracy and Mathematics, this ready-made and fully differentiated BGE S1-S3 course puts progression for every pupil at the heart of your curriculum.

– Make new learning manageable: Each concept is introduced through step-by-step explanations and rigorously worked examples, set within real life contexts that are relevant to pupils

– Apply knowledge and practise skills: Pupils are encouraged to test and explore their understanding of new concepts by completing exercises that gradually build in difficulty – with answers provided at the back of the book

– Meet the needs of each pupil in your class: The explanations and activities are designed to ensure accessibility for those with low prior attainment, while coverage of higher order thinking skills will challenge and extend more able pupils

– Effectively check and assess progress: ‘Check-up’ exercises at the end of each chapter consolidate learning and support formative assessment, helping you monitor progression against the Experiences & Outcomes and Benchmarks (with additional assessments and worksheets in the separate Planning & Assessment Pack)

– Lay firm foundations for National qualifications: The skills, knowledge and understanding established through the course will set pupils up for success at National 4, National 5 and beyond

– Deliver the ‘responsibility for all’ Es and Os: Plenty of activities that address literacy and health and wellbeing skills are threaded through the book

Reviews

This book covers all of the BGE Benchmarks for Mathematics and Numeracy at Third Level. It is colourful and inviting, striking a good balance between text and diagrams. Each chapter includes a short introduction, a selection of worked examples and plenty of questions and fun activities to be tackled by the learner. A check-up exercise concludes the chapter and answers are available at the back of the book. One of the key strengths of this book is the way in which methods and worked examples are communicated. A great deal of thought has clearly gone into choosing appropriate examples and clear, concise explanations. It is obvious that the authors are familiar with the needs of pupils in the BGE phase. Consequently, this book would be equally suited for use both in a classroom environment and, possibly more important now than ever, as a tool for home learning. Each exercise strikes a careful balance between an appropriate amount of core practice and more challenging questions to extend the more able student. For instance, the section on 'evaluating expressions' builds up learners' skills in the basics of substitution before challenging them with a selection of code breaking activities, matching equivalent expressions and even a substitution crossword. Also available to purchase for a one-off fee of £85 plus VAT is the downloadable Planning and Assessment Pack, containing teaching notes, homework exercises and assessments for each chapter as well as block tests and a whole course assessment. This book is an outstanding resource for all pupils studying Third Level Mathematics and I would not hesitate to recommend it to pupil, parent or teacher. I am eagerly anticipating the opportunity to utilise this resource with my own classes.
