Was there an inspiration behind this book?
Absolutely! A very special one. Story of My Life was inspired by readers who reached out saying they wished they could move to one of my fictional towns. So I decided to write a book based on the idea of a town that a romance writer and her readers bring back to life. It’s my love letter to readers.
What do you think readers will find most engaging about the storyline?
Besides the sex scenes? Just kidding (but seriously, they’re great). I’m hoping readers will love the humor and the messy, wonderful family dynamics of the Bishop brothers. They were one of my favorite families I’ve ever written and the banter is top tier.
Do you have a favourite character in the book? What makes them so special to you?
I think Zoey, Hazel’s best friend/literary agent, ended up being my favourite! She’s so aggressively loyal and funny. Everyone deserves a best friend like her. She’s the heroine of the second book, Mistakes Were Made, and I love her so much.
In the book, Hazel’s breakup causes her to have writer’s block. Have you ever had writer’s block, and if so, how did you overcome it?
I have a more mild form of writers block with every book. I always run into an issue that brings the words to a screeching halt. But I’ve perfected my formula for solving it. First when it hits, I go back to the beginning and start editing because at least I’m still being productive. If that doesn’t work, I step away from the book and rejoin the real world. I try to do something that’s the opposite of sitting at a screen, so yoga, shopping, going out to dinner with friends. If none of that helps, I lay down on the floor of Mr. Lucy’s office and complain about how hard it is to write a book. The solution usually presents itself after applying that formula.
Do you have a go-to cocktail or preferred drink for winding down after a busy day (or celebrating a productive one)?
I love a nice dirty martini with blue cheese stuffed olives. Or a refreshing gin and tonic!
