Go Set a Watchman has got us thinking…
With the hugely anticipated arrival of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD’s ‘parent novel’, we started to talk about which of classic stories we’d like to know the next chapter. Given Harper Lee’s second novel has parted the Twitter sea, it’s of little surprise that opinions are divided within the Bookends camp.
Abbie: NIGHTS AT CIRCUS by Angela Carter
Okay, I do understand that this is a no dice suggestion because unless Angela left the manuscript in a secret drawer somewhere *please literary gods*, she’s unlikely to be writing it posthumously, but I genuinely believe that Fevvers is one of the greatest fictional heroines of all time and it would put to rest all the naysayers that claim she is nothing but an elaborate hoax – cynics!
Jeska: SENSE AND SENSIBILITY by Jane Austen
Enough already with all the PRIDE & PREJUDICE fan fiction/sequels/zombification, let’s give the Dashwood’s and that rascal, Willoughby some love. Marianne was way to flighty to settle with Colonel Brandon for long – so much potential for more falling dramatically down hills.
Vicky: Am I allowed to abstain?
With books and films, I often relish the idea of a sequel — another chance to revisit characters, places and even perhaps actors I love, but in reality it’s often so different. It holds so much promise, but is rarely what you expect because it takes away a little of the magic you experienced the first time around. Perhaps this is why they say to never go back to the exact holiday destination you once loved. It’s not to say you can’t read or watch a sequel and enjoy it, but you just need to remind yourself not to expect it to be bigger and better. Different can be good, too.
Fleur: CATCHER IN THE RYE by J.D. Salinger
I’d like to see a sequel of CATCHER IN THE RYE in which Sally comes back and kicks Holden’s arse for being such a whiny git.
