Team Bookends pick our favourite box-sets

Every once in a while, you need to take your nose out of a book and plonk it in front of the tv. You need to settle down on the sofa (often for many, many hours) with a mountain of ice cream, your phone off the hook and lose yourself in your favourite show. We’ve picked our favourite box-sets of all time, the ones that make us laugh and the ones that make us cry, and one thing is for sure, when you fall in love with a box set, you fall in love FOR LIFE!

This series still gives me ALL THE FEELINGS. You have not seen a love affair like Nurse Hathaway and Doctor Ross. You have not cried until you have followed Dr. Greene battle with a brain tumour (the memory is almost too painful!) Going back to Season 1 now feels distinctly retro but it is so worth it. There were 15 seasons in total so prepare to sacrifice sleep, the gym and socialising. It’s fine, this is better than all of those things.

How to Get Away With Murder

I’ve recently become obsessed with series 1 of How To Get with Murder. It’s a flashy American crime drama that centres around a hard-hitting law professor at a prestigious Philadelphia university who, with five of her students, becomes entwined in a murder plot. Viola Davis stars as the law professor and has received critical acclaim; she became the first African-American woman to win an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. The curveballs the show drops every episode are blinding, you never see them coming… well I didn’t! It was a huge hit in the States and I’d highly recommend.

I absolutely love Lena Dunham, obvs, so it was no surprise that I fell head over heels for Girls from Day 1. The series follows the lives of four friends who moved to New York after college and are trying to live their lives, achieve their dreams and fall in love. Think: Sex and the City minus all the glamour! These are four ordinary girls experiencing the trials and tribulations of any ordinary twenty-something living independently for the first time. They’re flawed, ridiculous, hilarious and completely relatable – you can’t help but liken each of the characters to somebody you know when you’re watching it.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched this show. From rushing home after school to tune in every Thursday on BBC 2, to cyclically marathoning it on Netflix more weekends than I care to admit, this show has been with me for a while. From the very first episode, where a teenage guy leads a girl into a deserted school only for her to turn around and bite his neck, this show is totally subversive and tonnes of fun. It has episodes that have me in stitches, singing out loud and balling my eyes out, and I will never be tired of it.
