Exclusive first look at THE SEA BETWEEN US trailer
In a remote Cornish cove, on one of the last days of summer, Robyn is drowning. She is saved – just – by local boy Jago, and it is a moment that will change both of them forever. Emylia Hall talks about the landscape that inspired her new novel and exclusively reveals the book trailer.
THE SEA BETWEEN US is a tale of girl meets boy, a love letter to Cornwall, and, not least, a paean to pleasure giving pursuits — surfing, art, music, woodwork. Over the course of the story people find their creative calling, they make things for one another out of love, and fold their hopes and dreams into their work — a splashed canvas, a perfectly carved scallop shell, a song. I’m very happy to share with you here the trailer for my novel, and even happier to say that it was made in that same spirit — friends, old and new, coming together to make something beautiful, for the pleasure of the process, and the buzz of creation.
Our trailer was filmed on location in Cornwall, mainly in West Penwith, the setting for THE SEA BETWEEN US. Filmmaker, and avid surfer, Gary Egerton went from Sennen to Cape Cornwall, from Pendeen to Treen, and beyond, with descriptions in the novel as his guide. The Cornwall caught on film is the Cornwall of the book — wild and wonderful, wind-blown, sea-sprayed; a landscape that leaves its mark upon you, that stays with you, wherever you travel.
The music was recorded exclusively for the trailer by Kate Haines, Ed and Jim Wallis of My Sad Captains (Bella Union). The talented trio worked out a new arrangement of the song I’m Always With You, which was originally written by my dad, Alwyn Hall, and first recorded by him in 2005. Some of the lyrics from I’m Always With You appear in the novel, and are central to the story. If you like the snatch of song you hear in this trailer, stand by for more where that came from, in the coming weeks…
I hope you enjoy this filmic, and sonic, taste of the book… Thanks for watching!
